Futures, CFDs and spot forex: what’s the difference?

  • Spot forex is buying and selling currency pairs directly, the way most forex traders and forex signals work.
  • Forex CFDs track currency pairs without you owning the currency. They are common in the UK, EU and Australia but banned for US retail clients.
  • Currency futures are exchange-traded contracts (such as CME Euro FX) with fixed sizes and expiry dates. Prices follow the same pairs, but contract sizes and costs differ.
