What this means for you

Freetrade isn’t a place to trade currency pairs directly. To trade forex you need a broker that offers it and is regulated where you live.

What you can do on Freetrade instead

  • Shares and ETFs, including in an ISA or SIPP

Futures, CFDs and spot forex: what’s the difference?

  • Spot forex is buying and selling currency pairs directly, the way most forex traders and forex signals work.
  • Forex CFDs track currency pairs without you owning the currency. They are common in the UK, EU and Australia but banned for US retail clients.
  • Currency futures are exchange-traded contracts (such as CME Euro FX) with fixed sizes and expiry dates. Prices follow the same pairs, but contract sizes and costs differ.

Choosing somewhere to trade forex

  1. Check the broker is regulated where you live (for example the FCA, NFA/CFTC, CySEC or ASIC).
  2. Compare spreads, commission and overnight swap.
  3. Start small, or on a demo account, and read how leverage and margin work.
