Futures, CFDs and spot forex: what’s the difference?
- Spot forex is buying and selling currency pairs directly, the way most forex traders and forex signals work.
- Forex CFDs track currency pairs without you owning the currency. They are common in the UK, EU and Australia but banned for US retail clients.
- Currency futures are exchange-traded contracts (such as CME Euro FX) with fixed sizes and expiry dates. Prices follow the same pairs, but contract sizes and costs differ.
Choosing somewhere to trade forex
- Check the broker is regulated where you live (for example the FCA, NFA/CFTC, CySEC or ASIC).
- Compare spreads, commission and overnight swap.
- Start small, or on a demo account, and read how leverage and margin work.
