A pip (“percentage in point” or “price interest point”) is the standard unit for measuring how far an exchange rate has moved. Traders talk in pips rather than raw prices because it makes moves comparable across pairs.
How big is a pip?
- For most pairs a pip is the fourth decimal place: 0.0001. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, it has moved one pip.
- For pairs quoted in Japanese yen a pip is the second decimal place: 0.01. If USD/JPY moves from 151.20 to 151.21, that is one pip.
Most brokers quote one extra digit, a pipette or fractional pip (one tenth of a pip). So EUR/USD at 1.08503 is 0.3 pips above 1.0850.
How much is a pip worth?
The cash value of a pip depends on your position size and the quote currency:
Pip value (in quote currency) = pip size × units traded
For one standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD, a pip is 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 US dollars. Because USD is the quote currency, no conversion is needed.
When the quote currency is not your account currency, you convert. One standard lot of USD/JPY gives 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 yen per pip. Divide by the USD/JPY rate to get dollars. At 150.00 that is about $6.67 per pip.
Our pip calculator does this for any pair and any account currency. There is also a dedicated pip value page for each pair, such as EUR/USD pip value or GBP/JPY pip value.
Pip value by lot size (quote currency USD)
| Lot | Units | Value per pip |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 100,000 | $10.00 |
| Mini | 10,000 | $1.00 |
| Micro | 1,000 | $0.10 |
| Nano | 100 | $0.01 |

Why pips matter for risk
Signals and strategies usually express stops and targets in pips: “stop 30 pips, target 60 pips”. On its own that tells you nothing about money at risk. A 30-pip stop on one standard lot of EUR/USD risks about $300. The same stop on a micro lot risks $3.
The professional habit is to fix the money you are willing to lose first, then work out the position size from the stop distance. That is exactly what our lot size calculator does, and it is the core of good risk management.
Pips and volatility
Different pairs move very different distances in a typical day. EUR/GBP often covers well under 40 pips while GBP/JPY regularly covers over 100. Each market page lists the pair’s average daily range in pips, which helps you set stops that fit the pair rather than copying the same number everywhere.
