Central bank
The institution that sets a country’s interest rates and monetary policy, such as the Federal Reserve, ECB or Bank of Japan. Its decisions are among the biggest currency drivers.
In practice
When the Federal Reserve signals more rate rises than expected, the dollar often strengthens across the board within minutes of the statement.
Trading the headline rate decision only. Markets usually react more to the guidance and press conference.
